Allergen Evaluation
you can’t manage if you don’t know
It’s unfortunate that so many who experience allergies have never been tested to determine their specific allergens nor their sensitivity, especially if they have been diagnosed with allergic asthma or know based on experience that a key trigger of their asthma exacerbation is an allergen. With the availability of skin allergy tests, blood allergy tests, and, recently, blood spot allergy tests, it’s surprising that so many of those who suffer from allergies, and, certainly those who experience actual asthma attacks are not encouraged to learn their allergens, so they can take preventative action to reduce or avoid their allergen exposures.
Often patients share with their primary care doctor that they experience allergies, and their doctor often will ask about their family history, their lifestyle, perhaps even inquire when they experience symptoms. Skin allergy tests are often performed by an allergy and asthma specialist, while blood tests may be ordered by a primary care physician. Recently blood spot allergy tests have emerged that can be administered in either a clinic setting or at home, and within a few days you can learn your sensitivity to specific allergens. It’s important that you discuss with a doctor your allergen profile following these tests so you can take action to reduce or prevent you exposure to allergens.
